Good font pairing usually comes down to contrast with a shared trait. Two fonts that are too similar feel like a mistake; two fonts with nothing in common feel chaotic.
Start with contrast
Pair a distinctive display or serif for headlines with a neutral, highly legible sans-serif for body copy.
Then look for a shared trait
Similar x-height, similar stroke contrast, or a shared era of design history all help two different fonts feel intentional together.
Limit yourself to two families
A heading font and a body font is enough for almost any website. Introduce a third only for small utility text like code or captions.
